Medical oncologists use a wide range of therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, and other systemic treatments. They coordinate closely with surgeons, radiation oncologists, and many other specialists to ensure each patient receives well-rounded, personalized care. Patients may be referred to a medical oncologist after a concerning test result, a biopsy, or a diagnosis made by another specialist. Because every patient and every cancer is different, medical oncologists develop individualized treatment plans based on the type of cancer, its stage, and each patient’s overall health and goals. Throughout treatment, they monitor progress, adjust therapies as needed, and support patients through symptoms, side effects, and the emotional challenges of a cancer diagnosis. ## What Medical Oncologists Do Medical oncologists specialize in diagnosing and treating cancer using systemic therapies, which are treatments that travel throughout the body. They guide patients through every stage of care, from the initial diagnosis to long-term follow-up. Their role includes evaluating test results, explaining treatment options, recommending therapy combinations, managing side effects, and monitoring how well treatments are working. They also help patients navigate the emotional and physical impact of cancer, connecting them with supportive services when needed. ## How Medical Oncology Works with Your Care Team Medical oncologists collaborate closely with many specialists involved in cancer care. This may include surgeons, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, genetic counselors, nurse navigators, infusion nurses, and supportive care teams. Together, they review diagnostic information, plan treatments, and coordinate appointments to ensure care is seamless and centered around each patient’s needs.
