It is appropriate at any age and at any stage of illness and can be provided alongside curative or life-prolonging treatments. The goal of palliative care is to help patients feel as well as possible by managing symptoms, providing emotional and spiritual support, guiding complex decisions, and ensuring care aligns with each person’s goals and values. This additional layer of support is available not only to patients, but also to their families and caregivers. ## What Palliative Care Helps With The palliative care team focuses on helping patients live more comfortably and maintain the best possible quality of life. They support patients by: - Managing symptoms such as pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, nausea, and appetite changes - Providing emotional, psychological, and spiritual support - Helping families cope with stress, uncertainty, and caregiving responsibilities - Coordinating communication among all members of the healthcare team - Assisting with treatment decisions and helping patients understand their options - Supporting advance care planning and sharing wishes for future care ## Common Questions About Palliative Care ##### Is palliative care the same as hospice? No. Hospice is for patients nearing the end of life who are no longer receiving curative treatment. Palliative care can begin at diagnosis and continue throughout treatment, recovery, and survivorship. ##### Does accepting palliative care mean I am giving up? Not at all. Palliative care is designed to help you feel better, stay active, and live as well as possible.
