## Welcoming Paulina R. Ramirez, MD

This September, I am honored to join the gynecologic oncology team at The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, serving patients and families throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

A cancer diagnosis can be one of the most difficult experiences in a woman's life. My goal is to walk alongside my patients every step of the way, ensuring they feel heard, understand their options, and feel empowered to make decisions about their health.

## Two meaningful reasons to come together

September is Gynecologic Cancer Awareness Month, a time to recognize the importance of knowing the signs, seeking timely evaluation, and supporting those affected by these cancers. It also marks Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 - October 15), an opportunity to celebrate our communities and the importance of accessible, culturally responsive care.

## Understanding gynecologic cancers

The five main types of gynecologic cancer are listed below, along with closely related fallopian tube and primary peritoneal cancers.

- Ovarian, fallopian tube & primary peritoneal cancers
- Uterine cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Vulvar cancer
- Vaginal cancer

Each type is different, and symptoms can vary. Discuss persistent or concerning changes with your healthcare provider.

## Awareness can lead to action

Symptoms can have many causes and do not necessarily mean cancer. Still, new, unusual, or persistent changes deserve a conversation with your healthcare provider.

**Signs and symptoms to discuss**

- Abnormal vaginal bleeding or discharge
- Pelvic or abdominal pain, pressure, or persistent bloating
- Feeling full quickly or changes in urinary or bowel habits
- Persistent vulvar itching, burning, pain, tenderness, or skin changes

**A note on screening**

Cervical cancer has established routine screening tests, including Pap and HPV testing. There is not reliable routine screening test for ovarian or primary peritoneal cancer in average-risk women. Discuss concerning symptoms and your family history with your healthcare provider.

Depending on cancer type and stage, treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or hormone therapy.
