Osteoarthritis
Overview
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis and occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones gradually wears down. This protective cartilage helps joints move smoothly, so when it becomes thinner or damaged, bones can rub against each other and cause pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, but it most often involves the hands, knees, hips, and spine. Symptoms tend to develop slowly and may worsen over time.
While joint damage cannot be reversed, many people are able to effectively manage symptoms. Staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and working with your care team to explore treatment options can help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support long-term joint function.
If joint pain from osteoarthritis is making daily activities more difficult, there are safe and proven treatment options beyond medication and injections. Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LD-RT) is a noninvasive approach that targets inflammation and helps reduce pain without surgery or downtime.
Signs & Symptoms
Osteoarthritis symptoms often develop gradually and may worsen over time. Common signs and symptoms include:
- Joint pain: Discomfort during or after movement, especially with increased activity
- Stiffness: Most noticeable in the morning or after periods of inactivity
- Tenderness: Sensitivity when pressing on or near the affected joint
- Reduced flexibility: Difficulty moving the joint through its full range of motion
- Grating or clicking: A sensation or sound of popping, crackling, or grinding with movement
- Bone spurs: Hard lumps that may form around the joint
- Swelling: Caused by inflammation in the soft tissues surrounding the joint
Symptoms can vary from mild to more limiting, and may flare with increased use or changes in activity level. If joint pain or stiffness begins to interfere with daily tasks, it is important to talk with your care team about evaluation and management options.
