Clinical Trials & Research
About This Service
Clinical trials and research programs offer patients access to innovative cancer treatments that are being studied for safety and effectiveness. By participating in a clinical trial, patients may receive promising therapies earlier while helping researchers learn more about how to prevent, detect, and treat cancer. Providing clinical trial opportunities reflects a commitment to high-quality, evidence-based care, supported by a team trained to follow rigorous safety and monitoring standards. Clinical trials allow patients to explore new treatment options close to home, with the support of a dedicated oncology and research team guiding them every step of the way.
Advancing Care Through Innovation and Research
Since 1998, under the research leadership of Dr. Ray Page, our practice has participated in nearly 200 clinical trials involving more than 60 experimental drugs, many of which have since earned FDA approval and are now used as standard of care treatments. Our physicians have become recognized leaders in the use of novel cancer agents, and hundreds of patients have already benefited from these groundbreaking research efforts.
Offering clinical trials reflects the highest standard of excellence in both clinical care and comprehensive patient management. Every member of our team, physicians to research staff, receive specialized training to uphold the strictest standards of good clinical practice as we safely administer experimental drugs and therapies.
What Clinical Trials May Involve
Clinical trials can study:
- New cancer medications
- Immunotherapy or targeted therapy combinations
- Chemotherapy delivered in new ways
- Radiation approaches or surgical techniques
- Supportive care methods to improve comfort or quality of life
- Diagnostic tests or genetic profiling
- Improve existing treatments
- Advance personalized medicine through biomarker driven studies
- Evaluate preventative strategies and early detection methods
Each trial has specific goals and eligibility requirements to ensure safety and meaningful results.
Trial Phases
Phase 1: Safety First
This is the first time a new treatment is tested in people. Researchers start with very low doses to find out:
- What dose is safe
- How the body reacts
- What side effects may occur
The goal is to find the highest dose that’s still safe.
Phase 2: Does it Work
Once safety is established, Phase 2 trials test whether the treatment works. Researchers look at:
- How well the treatment fights cancer
- Continued monitoring of side effects
Phase 3: Comparing Treatments
The new treatment is compared to the current standard of treatment. This phase includes:
- A large group of patients
- Detailed tracking of effectiveness and side effects
- Long-term outcome data
Sometimes phase 2 & 3 are combined.
Phase 4: Real World Results
After a treatment is approved, Phase 4 trials continue to monitor it in everyday use. THese studies help researchers understand:
- Long-term benefits and risks
- How the treatment works in a wide range of patients
- Potential new uses or combinations
Why Patients Consider Clinical Trials
Many patients explore clinical trial options to learn whether new or emerging treatments may be right for them. A trial may offer access to medications or therapy combinations that are not yet widely available, or it may help determine whether a targeted treatment matches the genetic features of their tumor. Patients often appreciate the added monitoring and support that comes with participating in a study, as well as the opportunity to contribute to research that may improve cancer care for others in the future.
Participation in a clinical trial is always voluntary, and patients may choose to withdraw from a study at any time.
Who May Be Eligible
Eligibility varies by study but may include patients who:
- Are newly diagnosed
- Have cancer that has returned or progressed
- Have cancers with specific genetic or molecular features
- Have not responded to standard treatments
- Want access to new or innovative options
Your oncologist or research team will explain which studies are available and whether any may be a good fit for you.
