Radiation Therapy

A machine directs high-energy radiation from outside the body to the area where the tumor is located. This is the most common form of radiation therapy and is usually delivered in short, outpatient sessions over several weeks.

An example of external beam radiation that The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders uses is the CyberKnife System® Robotic Radiosurgery. It is a noninvasive treatment that uses highly precise robotic technology to target tumors throughout the body, including the brain, spine, lung, liver, pancreas, kidney, and prostate. Despite its name, CyberKnife involves no surgery. It offers a pain-free option for patients with inoperable or complex tumors or for those seeking an alternative to surgery.

A radioactive implant is placed inside or near the tumor. Because the radiation source is close to the tumor, surrounding tissues are exposed to minimal radiation.

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders uses MammoSite Therapy for breast cancer, which places the radiation source directly into the space left after a tumor is removed. Treatment is typically short and completed on an outpatient basis.

Radiation is delivered orally or through an IV. The radioactive substance travels through the bloodstream and collects in tumor cells, exposing them to targeted radiation while limiting effects on healthy tissue.

SpaceOAR hydrogel is a temporary, absorbable gel placed between the prostate and the rectum before radiation therapy. It creates space to help reduce radiation exposure to the rectum, which may lower the risk of bowel, urinary, and sexual side effects. The hydrogel remains stable throughout treatment and is naturally absorbed by the body after therapy is complete.
