Services Second Opinions & Consultations

Offered at 21 Locations

A second opinion gives patients the opportunity to have their diagnosis or treatment plan reviewed by another cancer specialist. This visit allows you to ask questions, explore additional treatment options, and feel confident that your care plan is the right one for you. During a second opinion consultation, an oncology provider reviews your medical history, imaging, pathology, and test results, and discusses recommendations based on the most current evidence and guidelines. Many patients seek a second opinion to better understand their diagnosis, confirm their treatment approach, or learn whether clinical trials or advanced therapies may be available.Your care team will work with you to gather records, explain the findings, and answer any questions you may have. A second opinion does not replace your existing care team. Instead, it offers another expert perspective to support informed decision making and give you peace of mind as you move forward with treatment. At The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, our multidisciplinary team provides second opinions for patients at any point in their cancer journey. Our medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, hematologists, and supportive care teams collaborate to review each case thoroughly and offer personalized recommendations. We welcome patients who are newly diagnosed, seeking clarity about their treatment plan, or looking for access to advanced therapies and clinical trials.

Treatments Supportive Procedures

Supportive procedures are treatments that help manage symptoms, reduce side effects, and support the overall comfort and wellbeing of patients during cancer care. These procedures make it easier to continue treatment safely and may help prevent complications or unplanned hospital visits. Supportive procedures can include placing ports or PICC lines to deliver chemotherapy, draining fluid from around the lungs or abdomen to improve breathing, relieving pain through targeted injections or bone-strengthening treatments, or placing feeding tubes or stents to support nutrition and digestion. Other supportive therapies such as blood transfusions, hydration, or treatments for infection help patients stay stable and better able to continue their care.Your care team will recommend supportive procedures based on your diagnosis, symptoms, and treatment plan. Most procedures are minimally invasive and are performed in an outpatient or short-stay setting. You will be monitored closely before, during, and after the procedure to help ensure safety, comfort, and a smooth recovery.

Treatments Surgical Oncology

Offered at 11 Locations

Surgical oncology focuses on the use of surgery to diagnose, treat, or help prevent cancer. Surgery may be used to remove a tumor, evaluate whether cancer has spread, relieve symptoms, or support other treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy. The approach your surgeon recommends depends on the type of cancer, the stage of disease, and your overall health and treatment goals. Many cancer surgeries today are performed using minimally invasive techniques that can shorten recovery time and reduce discomfort. Your surgical and oncology teams work closely together to create a coordinated, personalized plan that supports both safety and long-term outcomes.

Treatments Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy is a type of cancer treatment that focuses on targeting specific features or changes within cancer cells. These medications work by blocking signals that cancer cells rely on or by acting directly on cells with certain genetic or molecular characteristics. Targeted therapy is usually recommended when testing shows that a tumor has a feature that matches a particular treatment. It may be used alone or combined with other treatments such as chemotherapy or immunotherapy based on each patient’s diagnosis and personalized care plan.Targeted therapy may be taken as pills or given through an infusion in an outpatient setting. Your care team will determine the most appropriate option for your specific tumor type and will monitor you closely to help manage side effects and ensure the treatment is working as intended.

Treatments Tumor Resection/Excision

Tumor resection, also called tumor excision, is a surgical procedure used to remove a tumor from the body. Surgery is often one of the first treatments considered for cancers that can be safely removed, and it may be used to diagnose, treat, or help stage the disease. In many cases, removing the tumor helps reduce symptoms, prevent the cancer from spreading, or improve the effectiveness of other treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy. The type of surgery recommended depends on the location, size, and stage of the tumor, as well as each patient’s overall health and treatment plan.Your surgical and oncology teams will determine the most appropriate approach for your diagnosis and work together to ensure a safe procedure, smooth recovery, and seamless transition to any additional treatments you may need.
