Did you know we have certified genetic counselors at The Center? Genetic counselors discuss an individual’s personal and family history of cancer to determine if it is hereditary using genetic testing. Families with a hereditary risk have a higher chance to be diagnosed with cancer. We encourage you to speak to your doctor if you have questions about genetic counseling. Approximately 10% of cancer is hereditary. Does cancer run in your family? Have you or your relatives been diagnosed with cancer at a young age? Genetic counseling and testing may be appropriate for you. Talk to your doctors about a referral to our cancer genetic counselors.
What happens if you or your family members have a genetic mutation associated with hereditary cancer? The goal is to catch a cancer at an early, more treatable stage or prevent a cancer from happening. Genetic counselors work with your medical team to manage risk reducing strategies and cancer screening.
